VOLUNTARY MUSICIANS

ACTION OF UNION

When the House of Representatives met this afternoon Mr. F. W. Doidge (National, Tauranga) gave notice that he would ask the Minister of Labojtr (Mr. Webb) whether he was aware that people who voluntarily gave musical services to patriotic functions were being threatened with prosecution unless they joined the Musicians' Union.

"On a recent Sunday," said Mr. Doidge, "an official;! of the Auckland

Musicians' Union arrived at the home of Mrl D. W. Barnett, a well-known resident of Katikati, in the Bay of Plenty, called him a 'scab,' and told him he would be prosecuted unless he immediately became a member of the Musicians' Union. Mr. Barnett is not a, professional pianist, and gives Jiis services voluntarily to the Red Cross at their occasional functions.

"A Waihi newspaper also reports that, on a recent Saturday evening, an official of the Auckland Musicians' Union called on a farmer in the Karangaheke district, who had been voluntarily assisting at patriotic functions, and,issued a similar threat."
