FELL WITHOUT A FIGHT
FRENCH AFRICAN
POST
LAST VICHY STRONGHOLD
* LONDON, November 16,
A message from Bruzzaville (French Congo) states that General de Gaulle's forces have occupied Port Gentil, the last Vichy stronghold in French Equatorial Africa, without a fight.
A communique by General de Gaulle in* London states that the 350-ton patrol vessel La Poumic has been sunk in an action with the enemy.
LONDON, November 17. Port Gentil is the second port of the French colony of Gabon, and a communique from the headquarters of the Free French Forces in London says that the whole of Gabon is now part of the Free French Empire. The surrender of the port took place two days after Libreville capitulated to General de Gaulle's troops. General de Gaulle himself visited Libreville on Friday and received the civil and military authorities there. A communique says that General de Gaulle was glad to see for himself that no inhabitants of Libreville or the neighbouring district had been killed or wounded in the course of the police operation which resulted in the rallying of Gabon to the Free French Empire according to the wishes of the population. It is stated that the large proportion of the troops which opposed the advance of the Free French Forces have now asked to join their ranks.
