HUTT SWIMMING CLUB
A large number of members and friends attended the opening of the Hutt Valley Amateur Swimming Club's season at Riddiford Baths on Saturday afternoon. The Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) wished the club a successful season, and referred to the baths as the best in the Wellington district. The club had done well in the past, and despite the war he knew it would carry on with its good work. Mr. A. T. Duncan, president of the club, referred tn the casualties already caused in the New Zealand forces overseas by accidents such as drowning, and expressed the opinion that swimming should be made a compulsory part of the education of all young New Zealanders.
Mrs. J. W. Andrews, Mayoress of Lower Hutt, and Mr. V. L. Allan, president of the Wellington centre of the- New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, also spoke. There was a short programme of swimming and a polo match between Petone and Hutt.
