The following .appointments , .and promotions of officers of the New Zealand Military Forces have been gazetted:— . Major A. H. L. Sugden, N.Z.S.C., Commandant, Army School of Instruction, Trentham, is granted the temporary rank. of ■ Lieutenant-Colonel while so employed. Captain 3. H. Sharp, N.Z.S.C., Staff Officer, Supplies and Transport, Army Headquarters,- is granted the temporary rank of Major while so employed. Captain R: J. :D. Davis, Instructor, Army School of Instruction, Trentham, is granted the temporary rank of Major while so employed. Regiment of Royal N.Z. Artillery. Captain J. P. Joyce, D.C.M., Staff Officer, Artillery, Army Headquarters, is granted the temporary rank of Major while so employed. N.Z. Permanent Staff.. Lieutenant and Quartermaster (acting Captain and Quartermaster) G. P. The following are appointed dental officers at Trentham Mobilisation Camp:-— ■ Lieutenants S, A. S. Blue, H. N. Anderson, J. Hawksworth, J.. B. Muir. National Military Reserve. Major C. McL. Smith is appointed officer commanding the 2nd (Wellington) Battalion and is granted the temporary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. . Lieutenant-Colonel Sugden, Lieutenant-Colonel Sugden was born at Geraldine* Canterbury, and educated at Christ's College. He graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Australia, in 1921, and received his first appointment to commission as a lieutenant in the New Zealand Staff Corps. He held various staff appointments in Wellington, Hawerav Dunedin, and Napier, until 1927, when he proceeded to India and was attached, to the 2nd . Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. He returned to New Zealand, in 1929 and six years later went to. England, where he attended a series.of courses, in small arms, machine-gun, anti-gas,, and other military subjects at various army schools. He returned to New Zealand in 1937 and was attached to the Army School, Trentham, as instructor until his appointment in May last as Commandant.
