MAJORITY OF ISSUES APPEAR TO BE OPEN

Though not the birthplace, Canterbury, settled by Englishmen with the, love of the thoroughbred coursing warmly in. their Hood, was the nursery of racing in New Zealand, and Cup Carnival Week at Christchurch, now embracing four days' galloping and three days' trotting, has always been recognised as the high light of the Dominion's sporting calendar. This year's opening will take place tomorrow, when the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting will be commenced at Riccarton and the New Zealand Cup and Stewards' Handicap double will be decided. The usual large crowd of visitors from all parts of the Dominion is expected to be in Christchurch for the week, and the Jockey Club and the Trotting Club both anticipate fixtures comparable with the highest peak days of the past.
