CITY MISSION
CHRISTMAS CHEER APPEAL
"Having in mind the numerous appeals which are being addressed to you for war purposes, it is with an apology and yet with confidence that I once more appeal to the citizens of Wellington on behalf of the Wellington- City Mission Christmas Cheer Fund," writes the Rev. H. Squires, iCity Missioner. "The war, with its j appeals for patriotic purposes, has j affected the mission's income considerably, but at the same time the need for its work has not diminished; in fact, it has increased in no small way. The ; mission is maintaining a boys* hostel, which accommodates 45 boys, and its work among the old age pensioners is still going on. On an • average 90 pensioners come to the mission for the hot meals which are served daily. At Christmas time the need often increases more, and there' are still hundreds of cases that look to the mission for extra help at .this time..,. Last year over 100 old people sat down to the Christmas dinner at the mission, and 150 dinners were distributed to people who. had cooking facilities in their, own rooms. Last year, through the- generosityoor the public, the mission was able to give a little extra in- the way of sweets ■ and tobacco to inmates of the prisons. "The mission also conducts camps for boys and girls.. Last year 170 boys arid girls were provided with 10 days' holiday by the mission, and many of these children would not have had a holiday, but for the organisation. Besides all this there is the children's Christmas party and tree for the poorer children of the city, and parcels' of toys are sent to the larger families for th» smaller children. l •....- ---"If you cannot send in your money, please ring me at 53-393, and I will se that it is" collected," the missioner concludes. .'■'..'
