REPORT DENIED
STATEMENT BY MR. LUCAS
Mr. C. Lucas, the Australian promoter and manager, commenting today on the Auckland message, said that it was incorrect in more than one particular. In the first place the fight had not been definitely arranged, and, in view of the Auckland report, it was actually more doubtful today than it had been. The reference to £150 for Alabama Kid, win.' lose, or draw, did not correctly state the position in respect of the purse.
In denying a published report that the Manawatu association had asked him to promote the contest, Mr. Lucas said that the position was that the Manawatu body had asked him, as one who had had experience in such matters, to assist in arranging and staging the bout. Beyond that his part in the proceedings would not go.
The position in respect of the purse, said Mr. Lucas, was that the Manawatu association intended to apply to the New Zealand Boxing Council for permission to give a larger purse than that provided for under the rules. This was in accordance with the rules, which made provision for special circumstances. Mr. Lucas had no doubt that all the council's rules would be observed by the Manawatu association,
Mr. Lucas said that Alabama Kid arrived in Wellington today, and that negotiations in connection with the contest were proceeding.
