RAIDS ON LONDON

HEAVIEST FOR WEEKS

FIVE ENEMY PLANES DOWN

LONDON, November 1

Air activity over Britain has been more widespread than for some time past, and London tonight has experienced one of the heaviest -raids for several weeks. The sirens sounded earlier than usual, and were followed almost at once by an attack which is considered fierce in comparison with last night's raids.

An Air Ministry communique says that five enemy bombers have been brought down already. For the past few nights the raiders have been coming singly and at long intervals, but tonight they seem to be trying to force a path through the barrage in several directions at once.

From districts all around London the barrage is reported to be very heavy, and in some districts the guns were in action constantly for long periods. Before dropping bombs some of the raiders dropped parachute flares. The ground defences are having a very busy night.

Shortly after dusk one German plane crashed, and another bomber is reported to have been shot down by antiaircraft fire over Essex. The raiders also visited Liverpool and south-east Scotland, where, after circling over one area they dropped about 20 high-ex-plosive bombs. The aircraft flew at a great height beyond the range of searchlights.
