MAY BE A "SEA TANK"
SPECIAL ITALIAN DEVICE
(Received November 1, 9 a.m.)
LONDON, October 31. The only explanation yet offered of the special device used by the Italians in an attempt to torpedo ships at Gibraltar is a guess that it may be a development of the tiny torpedo craft called a "sea tank," used in 19.18 to sink a cruiser at an Austrian naval base in the Adriatic Features of the "sea tank" included a silent electric motor and barbed rotary chains enabling it to. crawl over harbour obstructions.
A communique issued at Gibraltar stated that the Italians unsuccessfully attempted to torpedo ships in the harbour with a special device. One torpedo exploded harmlessly at the harbo.ur entrance and another ran ashore on Spanish territory.
