CONGRATULATIONS TO AJAX

RUGBY, October 30

The Admiralty has received the following telegram from Santiago (Chile):—

"The victims of the Conception earthquake warmly congratulate the captain, officers, and men of H.M.S. Ajax on her great victory in the Mediterranean and pay homage to those who fell gloriously in the defence of their country and of civilisation."

Conception was one of the Chilean cities severely damaged by the earthquake of January, 1939, when the Chilean Government accepted the offer 6i the British Government to make use of the British cruisers Ajax and Exeter to transport supplies from Valparaiso to the stricken area.
