THORNDON SCHOOL CONCERT

The Masonic Hall was packed to capacity when the pupils of the Thorndon Public School held their annual concert recently. Among those present were the Minister of Education (Mr. Mason) and Mrs. Mason, Mrs. P. Fraser, and Mrs. Adam Hamilton, and the past headmaster, Mr. J. Costin Webb.

The highest praise is due to the teachers and to the master of ceremonies, Mr. W. Downie, for the excellence of the concert. All the classes were represented, from nursery tales by the infants, through plays and tap dances by the older standards, to the final tableau, "There'll Always Be An England," by Standards 4, 5, and 6. The last-named item depicted Britannia and the countries of the Empire, with Guides, Scouts, first aid children, and St. John nursing representatives. Special mention must be made of the singing, the rendering of "The Holy City" being particularly beautiful. "The Glowworm" scene was beautifully staged, the solo ballet work being done by Avis White. Ah instrumental interlude by Mrs. McGowan was popular with the audien j. The model rural school production was "An Old English Fair" and the special class produced "Richard Comes to Sherwood."

Th: chairman of the school committee, Mr. A. L. Holloway, in welcoming the guests, expressed the appreciation of the parents of the school in the interest of the Minister of Education and read a telegram from the Prime Minister expressing regret at his inability to be present but wishing the school and the function every success. Letters were also read from the Hon. A.'Hamilton and Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P., Mrs. Fraser, Mrs. Mason, and Mrs. Hamilton were presented with shoulder sprays of roses by three of the smallest pupils of the school, Diane Galloway, Beryl Hanify, and Eileen Needham, and Mr. Holloway presented Mrs. W. Downie with a bouquet of spring flowers for her services as pianist. The headmaster presented Mrs. Downie with a crystal bowl from the members of the staff.
