A GENEROUS STAR.

One of England's most beautiful actresses of the stage is now a prominent Hollywood personality—the 34----year-old Madeline Carroll. One of her best pictures was "Safari"\vith Douglas Fairbanks, jun., and she was also enjoyed in "Blockade" —with. Henry Fonda; "Honeymoon in Bali" —with Fred Mac Murray; "The General Died at Dawn"—with Gary Cooper; • and "Tlie Thirty-nine Steps"—with Robert Donat. Miss Carroll —who was married to a British officer, Captain Astley— was born in Staffordshire, and was a school teacher with a B.A. degree before taking up stage work in 1929. Her film debut was in the British picture "Guns of Loos." Miss Carroll is a firstclass yachtsman and shot. Her war contribution consists of caring for refugees, and before the capitulation of France, she was running, with the help of her mother, a chalet in France for orphans. Her generosity is well known in Hollywood.
