PRISONERS SENTENCED
! Frederick Walter. Beech, a ship's I fireman, aged 32, and John Patrick- ; Murphy, labourer and fireman, aged '41, were each sentenced to two years' 'hard labour in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon by Mr. Justice Ostler^ They were found guilty by a jury of [breaking into a shop 'in Manners (Streel and stealing furs, and a recomjmendation to mercy was made in the i case of Murphy. His Honour referred to the previous convictions of both. men, and said that had the jury known Murphy's record the recommendation, would not have been made. Mr. W. P.: Shorland appeared for the prisoners. August Albert Magnus, painter and labourer, aged 2..0, who had pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and theft at Gisborne, was sentenced to ! two years' Borstal detention. Morris iKingi, a farm labourer, aged 20 (Mr. IH. R. Biss). was sentenced to Borstal ! detention not exceeding three years for [arson and theft. He had also plended guilty at Gisborne. His Honour said the prisoner's conduct showed utter irresponsibility and lack of discipline, and the arson might have caused very heavy loss of property. I; Mr. W. R. Birks appeared-for th« I Crown.
