WELLINGTON AREA
Medical examination of the men in the .Wellington and Hutt Valley area called up for service in 3Nfew Zealand by' the first National Service ballot (including some men previously Ijoarded); discloses that out of a total of 1314 men dealt with by the doctors 604.have been passed fit, 243 have been declaimed temporarily ' unfit, and 467 'permanently unfit. Thus total rejections on medical grounds amount to 54 per cent. For various reasons the balance of the 1900 men drawn have not been medically examined. For instance, 79 seamen, 76 men who have enlisted in the Air Force, and 197 men in several classes meantime exempted from service have not ; been medically boarded. ■ Men already enlisted for home service totalled 35 and notifications sent 23 men were returned marked "gone, no address." There are also so'nie men who were unable to attend for medical examinations owing to physical disability or sickness and who will, where necessary, be examined by visiting boards.
