POLISH AND CZECH AIRMEN IN CAPE TOWN
CAPE TOWN, October 16.
South Africans had their first glimpse of Polish and Czecho-Slovak-ian airmen when a large number recently passed through the city.
been so successful. Here in New Zealand we are all anxious to do our bit with our own gardens. But what is to be the effect on those who make their livelihood from growing for the market, if the demand is lessened by our efforts? The women of British Columbia, we hear, have co-operated to can or preserve as much as possible of their own produce.
Now yesterday's ''Evening Post" contained a letter of appreciation from a soldier at receiving a tin of apricots in his parcel. His next sentence is significant: "Any fruit is welcome here, as we don't see any, or vegetables either, for that matter." Our boys overseas need fruit and vegetables to keep them fit. Here in our own country we are threatened with a surplus wastage of these most necessary articles of diet. It is a sorry sight in the ! summer months to see cases of un- | purchased vegetables, withered and useless, being taken from our city shops. While we have a couple of months ahead of us yet, cannot plans be made for dealing with this surplus produce, so that it may be.canned and sent to our boys who are so desperately in need? As a child I was taught, "Waste not, want not, for wilful waste makes woeful want." lam still using bottled tomatoes and tomato pulp from my own garden, which has also kept us well supplied with salads all through the winter. Our Government cannot afford to imitate the ostrich. The Primary Produce Marketing Department must tackle this matter in earnest. What a thrill our soldiers would get to find not one, but half a dozen tins of fruit i and vegetables in their next parcels. ] Can we not make this our national aim in the coming season? With all good wishes, I am, etc., — I AMATEUR GARDENER. i Belmont. October 16.
