LONDON CONFIDENT
STOCK EXCHANGE GAINS
ABUNDANCE OF CREDIT
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, October 16.
As reflected on the Stock Exchange in the movements of both gilt-edged securities and the better-class equities, the confidence of the British people has been entirely unaffected by the events of the past week. These events included the intensive bombing of London and the developments in south-eastern Europe and the Far East which, on the short view, might be regarded as unfavourable. Gilt-edged securities during the week registered gains and last night the old 3£ per cent, war loan closed at £102 15s, while there were rises of from i to £ a point in most long-term issues.
The industrial index last week rose to 66.2—a gain of 1.3 points on the preceding week's level. This had its counterpart in the money market, a feature of which is the abundance of credit.
