KATHERINE MAYO
FAMOUS WRITER'S DEATH
The death occurred last week of Katherine Mayo, the well-known American writer. She was born of American ancestry at Ridgway, Pennsylvania, and was educated at private schools in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her "Justice for All" was published in 1917 and was followed by "The Standard Bearers" in 1918. With the American entry in to the World War she went abroad to write the history of the V.M.C.A. in the conflict and the book, entitled "That Damned V," was brought out in 1921. Four years later, after a visit to the Philippines, she published "Islands of Fear," a study of the United States effort to hasten self-government in that part of the ! world. In 1926 she visited India to i survey the conditions of women there, !and in the following year published jthe work which brought her most fame, "Mother India." It was largely based on official documents and was a book which provoked the strongest reaction. It was attacked by Indians and inspired, among other works, the "What About Europe?" of Norman Douglas. It was followed by "Slaves of the Gods," not so powerful in its effect, for much of the ammunition had been expended in the first book, and nine years ago by a reply to her critics entitled "Volume Two." Other books by Katherine Mayo included "Soldiers, What Next?" "The Face of Modern India," which was published in 1935, and "George Washington's Dilemma" which came out two years ago and took her into a new field. Her home was at Bedford Hills, New York.
