SUNDAY CONCERT

TRENTHAM BAND

The large .audience at the Town Hall last evening, when the band of the Trtntham Camp gave a concert in aid of the funds of the Mayor's Metropolitan Relief Committee, gave"ample evidence of its appreciation of the fare offered by the band. Under the baton of. Lieutenant C. Pike the band played a varied programme and demonstrated in no uncertain manner its claim to be regarded as one of the best brass bands in the Dominion.

In addition to the programme by the band, Mr. Joe Shriner led the audience in community singing. Several well-known hymns were also sung by the audience, with grand organ accompaniment. Mr. Bob Henry presided at the piano and Mr. W. H. Godier at the grand organ. The vocalists were Mr. Tom Wood, the well-known Wellington baritone, and Mr. Val. Jones, a brother of the musical comedy star, Mr. Lance Fairfax.

During the concert occasion was taken to present to the audience Mr. "Paddy" Cole, bandmaster of the Rifle Brigade in the last war. Mr. Cole took the first New Zealand Army Band overseas, in August, 1914, when he led the band which accompanied the New Zealand troops to Samoa. On the five days' trek to the Somme Mr. Cole led the band which accompanied the New Zealand troops, and after the Somme he was given the task of reorganising the four New Zealand Battalion Bands. Mr. Cole, whose war injuries have precluded him from taking any active part in the present war, was accorded a rousing reception by the audience.

\ The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, who 'was present, thanked the officer comimanding the Trentham Band for permitting the band to give a concert in Wellington; also the bandsmen for the fine programme they had presented. Thanks were also extended to Mr. Joe Shriner and the soloists, and to Messrs. Stewart, Lawrence, and Co., Ltd., who donated a fine souvenir programme for the occasion. As a result of the concert a substantial sum will be added to the Christmas Cheer fund of the Mayor's Metropolitan Relief Committee.
