German Formations Over Britain

FIVE RAIDERS DOWN

LONDON, October ll . By 5 o'clock this afternoon British fighters had broken upseveral formations of German aircraft which tried to : reach London, and had brought down §ye of the raiders. Five British fighters were lost, but all of the pilots are safe, although one is injured. V The latest attempt to reach London during daylight was made up the Thames" Estuary. It was broken up within ten minutes" British fighters dived on the German planes, which •' broke formation. . Some of the raiders turned northwards, but they ran into more fighters and all the German machines were driven off without any bombs being dropped. One east coast town had three separate attacks during the afternoon. A number of. people were injured but no deaths have been reported so far.

Last night's raids were made over a wide atrea of London and the provinces. Some damage was caused, but casualties were slight.

Bombs have fallen in the London area since nightfall and German raiders have been reported near Liverpool. Damage was done to houses, and in Canterbury windows in the Cathedral were broken by a bomb which fell in the town. Fortunately the famous stained glass in the Cathedral had been removed and the structure of the Cathedral is unharmed. German planes also crossed the Dorset coast in the morning and again in the afternoon, but did not get . far on either occasion. No casualties or damage are reported from that area.
