I Following telephone conversation! j with the Official Labour Leader, Mr. j iJ. Curlin, in Pert'] today, the Pre- ! mier, Mr. R. G. Menzies, announced i that the conference of political party ; leaders called for Friday has been i postponed till .Monday, by .when it! is expected that all the doubtful seats will have been resolved and the true state of the parties will be known. .'The postponement of the conference is. due to the fact that Mr. Curtin is unable to reach Melbourne from Perth before the 'weekend. . . ! The distribution of preferences in j three of the six doubtful New -South j Wales seats in the Federal Election re- ' suited in the defeat of the Government retiring candidate, Mr. J. Jennings, in the Watson electorate, by the Official Labour candidate, Mr. S. Falstein, by 2400 votes; Mr. J. B. Chifley. (Official Labour) has defeated the retiring Government candidate, Mr. J. N. Lawson, in Macquarrie by 8000 votes; Mr. C. Morgan (Official Labour) has defeated the retiring Non-Communist Labour candidate, Mr. J. Gander, in the Reid constituency by 2341 votes. Mr. Gander was a member of the Beasley Labour "Non-Communist" group, and this reduces it to four in the House of Representatives. The Robertson seat has been won by Mr. E. Spooner (Government) from the retiring Government member, Mr. E. Gardner, by only 345 votes. Mr. Spooner was a Minister in the former Stevens Ministry in New South Wales. The Hume seat has been retained by the retiring Country Party candidate, Mr. T. Collins, whose majority over his nearest opponent, Mr. C., Nolan (Official Labour) was 920 votes.
