NEW DEMANDS
ITALIANS IN SYRIA
AXIS GRIP SOUGHT
REPORTS IN CAIRO
LONDON, October 1
There are persistent reports in Cairo that the Italian Armistice Commission in Syria has presented fresh and far-reaching demands to the French authorities.
These demands appear to be directed towards giving Italy and Germany a further grip on Syria. They include authorisations for many former German propagandists to return to Syria and the Lebanon, the publication of an Italian newspaper in Beirut, the publication of Italian and German communiques in the local Press, and the right for Germans and Italians to wear party badges where they wish and to resume the organisation of youth movements.
