TROTTING

A BRIGHT PROSPECT

CLOVERDALE AT THAMES

(By "Ariki Toa.")

The improved form shown by the American-bred pacer Cloverdale, when he secured a first and a second at the recent Auckland Meeting, draws attention to his prospects in the Hauraki and Totara Handicaps at Thames on Saturday, and in whichever race he is started at the weekend he should take a lot of beating. He is a particularly smart beginner, and the fact that he is handicapped on 12 yards behind in both contests should not affect his prospects. Son of Lawn Derby. Master Lawn, who figures among the acceptors for the Karaka Handicap at Thames on Saturday, is a four-year-old owned by the Tamahere trainer R. A. McMillan. He is by the Austea-, lian champion Lawn Derby, 1-59J£>. and, according to northern reports,; shows a good deal of promise in his work to date. Change of Stables. j After racing at Hutt Park recently Nawton Parrish was taken over by vBennett, and the Great Parrish gelding will in future be trained at Aldington Nawton Parrish is getting towards a mile in the open sprint at Hutt FarK. He is still on a comparatively loose mark, and he should not be difficult to place to advantage round the smaller meetings. May Race at Hutt Park. Owing to the Wanganui racecourse being required for military, purposes the Wanganui Trotting Club is endeavouring to finalise arrangements to hold it" nlxt meeting at Hutt Park. No concrete proposal has yet been offered the Wellington Trotting Club, but it is understood that one day of the .twoday date may be incorporated witn we Wellington Club's permit for November. ■ "" ;,' Back in North. Mah Jong did not have a lopg.B^ in the South Island, for after her failure at New Brighton last month she was brought north by J. Bryce and has since been returned to J. I. Paul's stable at Mangere. This mare has a most consistent record during recent months, and she will have further opportunities to increase her winnings in the future. It is understood that she will receive a special: preparation for the Ro>ve Trotting Handicap at Epsom at Christmas. Showing Promise. The three-year-old filly by Gallant Knight from Worthy Queen in F. C. Dunlevey's stable is being kept at the pacing gait, and to this stage of her preparation she is showing a fair amount of promise. She has an inclination to trot, but the easy manner in which she moves with the hopples on suggests that she will have little difficulty in developing into a speedy pacer. She will race as Gallant Queen Statistics. Statistics published in the official calendar show R. Townley to be the leading owner for the first six weeks of the present season with £850, all contributed by Dusky Sound. C. S. Donald has earned £700 with Marlene. while W. O. Smith's good little mare Lady Milne has won £650. M. C. McTigue is credited with £530. F. J. Smith £512 10s, D. W. Crosbie £470. and Mrs. E. Berryman £395;., New Zealand Cup Conditions.
