ALARM IN BERLIN

PEOPLE- SHELTER

CITY NOT ON VISITING LIST

LONDON, September 30

British raiders over Germany on Sunday night must have caused an alarm in Berlin, because the people spent nearly two hours in their shelters, though, according to neutral reports, no planes were seen over the capital j and no anti-aircraft guns were in action there. The German news agency says the British bombers were turned back by anti-aircraft fire before they reached the capital, but it is more likely that Berlin did not happen to be on the R.A.F.'s visiting list on Sunday night. The Bremen radio announced that several British planes raided thicklypopulated residential quarters in Cologne. Incendiary and explosive bombs caused 16 casualties, including four deaths. j (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) i (Received October 1, noon.) I i LONDON, September 30. I Berllners spent an hour and 50 minutes in the shelters last night. There was no shooting, and no planes were; heard. Neutral correspondents in Berlin! see a sinister significance in the fact; that the authorities have advised citizens to obtain gas masks. The im- \ plication that the British might use I gas has caused much speculation. A German communique says that! single enemy planes reached Brandenburg last night and that some bombs were dropped but no military damage done. There were many civilian casualties.
