BIRTHS INCREASE

SEPTEMBER'S FIGURES
A substantial increase in. births for ' September of this year, and for the last quarter-year and, three-quarters of a year, is shown when the latest figures compiled by the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages are compared with those, of the previous year. Last month births increased by 2.1, deaths dropped by one only, but marriage notices issued and marriages performed by the Registrar were little more than a third of those recorded for the previous September. At that time, ho.\v-1 ever, war had just broken out and there was a tremendous boom in the marriage business. Figures for September, compared with those of. the corresponding month of last year, are as follows: — 1940. 1939. Births 233 212 Deaths 130 131 Marriage notices 144 340 Marriages, by Registrar .... 34 94 The following are the figures for the quarteryear periods, with the figures for the first nine months of each year in parentheses:— 1940. 1939.
