OVER 2000 UNDER WAY.

FUTURE PLANS

Many areas in and around WellingDn have altered rapidly during recent /ears as large numbers of State houses were erected in more or less compact groups, and the Minister of Housing (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) states that other areas are being prepared for future building programmes. Completed homes now number 1630 and another 671 are under construction. Housing construction is proceeding in Wellington cityv and environs as rapidly as the present circumstances will allow, the Department of Housing Construction states. At September 20 the total number of house units advertised for contract was 2379, and a total Of 2301 houses have been contracted for. At Miramar two large areas are being serviced and developed and many units are under construction there. Plans ior another 200 units at Miramar will be prepared in the near future. WORK IN HUTT VALLEY. In the Hutt area there are about 400 units under construction and land Is i being prepared for approximately 1400 more, but the work is not far enough advanced for the exact number to be stated. New roads are being laid out, a new main sewer from Petone is Hearing completion, and there is provision for the extension of the Eastern Hutt railway. In addition to units under construction or built, land is being prepared for about 120 units in Ngaio and Khandallah, and 100 at Karori. Land is also being prepared at Upper Hutt and Johnsonville, but building cannot be proceeded with immediately in those districts as the preparation of the sections includes roading and drainage. In addition to houses and semidetached units, blocks of flats are being built at Berhampore, Petone, and Lower Hutt. The largest block is at Berhampore and a number of the fifty flats in the block are already occupied. The block is built around a square and the flats along the northern side were the first to be occupied. The western block was next and some of the flats in the southern wing are now ready. The wing on the eastern ride, which is of three storeys, will be completed last. The majority of the' units in the block are for couples or individual tenants. Drawings for a block of a iut 130 flats in the city are nearing completion.
