BASE RECORDS
MINISTERIAL VISIT
The Army Base Records office in Victoria Street was visited yesterday by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser), other members of Cabinet I (including members of the War Cabijnet), and representatives of the Army Department. The visitors made a comIprehensive tour of the office, accomIpanied by the Director of Pay Accounts land Base Records (Mr. R. S. Wogan) and other senior officers, who explained the whole system under which the records and the pay accounts are kept. Ministers watched members of the large staff at work in the various sections of the office and took a special interest in the accounts section, where many kinds of labour-saving office equipment—adding machines, giant automatic addressing machines, folding machines, and so on—are in use.
The official party consisted of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and the Hon. Adam Hamilton (members of the War Cabinet), the Hon. D. Wilson (Leader of the Legislative Council and associate member of the War Cabinet), the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry), the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin), MajorGeneral Sir Andrew Russell (InspectorGeneral of the New Zealand Military Forces), and Mr. F. B. Dwyer (Assistant Army Secretary).
The visitors were met at the entrance to the building by the Director of Accounts and Base Records (Mr. Wogan), Mr. E. H. Heppleston (Accountant, Pay Accounts), and Mr. J. R. Mcßryde (Chief Clerk).
At the conclusion of the tour of the offices, Mr. Fraser said he was very favourably impressed with the organisation of the office and the manner in which the work was being done.
