THE FOXTON MEETING.

SATURDAY'S FIELDS

COURSE IN CAPITAL ORDER

Without exception, the meetings con-, ducted by. the Foxton Racing Club since 1933, when the club first abandoned the former January dates and took separate Saturdays in the winter, and spring respectively, have been a great success^ There have been repeated increases in investments, and the Foxton. fixtures, despite the fact that they are, not served by railway transport, are among the most popular provincial meetings at this end of the North Island.

I Fields of excellent quality and size have again been secured for the meeting to be held on Saturday, and the result promises again to be most satisfactory from the clubs-point of view. Twelve months ago the racing was staged at Awapuni, but. activities were resumed at Foxton last May on the reconstruction of the grandstand destroyed by fire two years ago. Win-and-place betting will again be used on Saturday. This system was tried in 1935 but was then dropped, and it was only at the winter fixture in May that it was-reinstated, when it proved popular -with good" fields and good all-round dividends; The course at Foxton is one of the best in the Dominion for winter and spring racing, as it is of sandy formation and never becomes actually heavy. The going on Saturday, after the recent spell of fine weather, promises to be at its very best. The feature item on the card is the Carnarvon Handicap, which in the past has been the Carnarvon Cup but has no trophy attached to it this year. Since the race was instituted in 1933 some good horses have won it, including Carfex, Fersen (who went on to win the N.Z. Cup six weeks later), Happy Landing, and Quadroon. In Saturday's field of fifteen there is now a deal of form, among it Lady Montana, Winsome Lv, Little Robin, Gaelic Song, Colonel Bogey, and Noble Fox, with improvers in Siegmund, Master Cyklon, Night Eruption, and Pearl of Asia. There is also a very serviceable field of eleven in the Robinson Handicap, which has always proved tricky for investors, as not a single favourite has won it since the club first raced, in the spring. Among the better form engaged are Mittie, Night Eruption, Screen Star (last year's winner), and Nigger Boy, while improvers are Taurangi, Footloose, The Buzzer, White Rajah, and Heroic Maid.
