HEALTH CAMP FUND
STREET DAY APPEAL
A street appeal was held in Wellington today for the Health Camp funds, for the assistance of delicate and illconditioned children. As a result, a large number of children will receive the benefit of a six weeks' stay at the Otaki Health Camp.
Today's appeal is related to the opening of the health stamp campaign, which begins on October 1 and closes early- in the New Year. Because- of the numerous calls on the public for patriotic funds and other war purposes, the receipts from this source fell off markedly last year. The Wellington Children's Health Camp Association is optimisitc that there will -be increased support during the coming campaign. Every £1 that is given to the Otaki Health Camp carries a £2 subsidy by the Government (from Art Union funds). This, it is anticipated, will stimulate and encourage the public to be liberal in its assistance. For every £2 subscribed, one infant or child will have six weeks in camp, with the benefits, of invigorating air, plain and wholesome food.
Last year, 657 children were admitted to the camp and remained for six weeks. Even after a short period, a definite improvement in health was manifest. All put on weight. Weight charts, of course, can only be regarded as a gauge of general improvement. The improvement in mental alertness and behaviour of the children, though it could not be recorded, was obvious. Tomorrow there will be a street day
