FIRE-ALARM SYSTEM
NEW ONE FOR CITY) AREA
The Duplex fire-alarm system, new to Wellington but in vogue in the other main centres in the Dominion, is to be installed to cover the business area of the city in place of the Kirkby system, which was put in about 40 years ago. The Duplex system incorporates all the features necessary for modern fire-alarm transmission, and has been recommended to the Wellington Fire Board by its superintendent (Mr. C. A. Woolley), who considers it the best system available in New Zealand. At today's meeting of the board it was decided to place an order with a Dunedin firm for the system and to proceed wjth its installation. It is proposed under the new system to install at first 200 fire alarm boxes, and these will be designed to cover the business area of the city. The boxes they replace will be reconditioned, and the intention is to have them installed in districts where at present no fire alarms are installed, such as Ngaio and Khandallah.
