DAY IN PARLIAMENT

HOUSE IN TALKATIVE MOOD

', As was expected, the Statutes Amendment Bill, with its miscellany of 59 clauses, did not receive a particularly smooth passage through the House of Representatives yesterday, [several of its provisions receiving the | studied attention of the Opposition. One of these was the clause extending the Fair Rents Act for another year. The Opposition forced the House to a division^ but the clause was retained by 24 votes to 17. At 9 p.m., the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser). sensing a protractpd discussion, asked for urgency. With the disposal of the fair rents clause, the House proceeded nice and quietly until it came to a clause dealing with the hours of shops, and there was a holdup here that lasted until the early hours of this morning. The clause was eventually withdrawn after lengthy argument. Clauses relating to town-planning amendments and to transport appeals went to divisions, but were retained by substantial majorities. The Bill was reported back from the Committee and passed, and the House *rose at 2.20 a.m. today.

During yesterday afternoon Finance Bill No. 2 made its appearance, but, contrary to expectations, it contained no surprise*.
