SUCCESSFUL RE-ENTRY

Having his first race ride since he was seriously injured by a fall at Te Aroha four and a half years ago, W. J. Pascoe steered Bright Idea to victory in the Harris Memorial Hack and Hunters' Hurdles at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Pascoe, who for many years was associated with the Riccarton trainer T. H. Gillett, was successful on the flat, winning, among othei> races, the Dunedin Guineas on Gustavo in 1930. Owing * o increasing weight, he took to hurdue riding, his principal wins being in the Grand National Hurdles on Hounslow in 1933, the Wanganui Steeples on Riotous in 1935, and the Great Northern Hurdles on Stanchion, also in 1935. Pascoe did a good deal of riding on the West Coast of the South Island, where he scored several successes with Ravine, on whom he won the Greymouth Cup. Previous to Saturday he had not ridden since Solomon fell with him in the Ruakaka Hurdles at Te Aroha in 1936, when he had a leg badly smashed. The injured limb took a long time to mend, and Pascoe decided to retire. However, the call of racing proved too strong, and for a few months past he has visited Ellerslie to ride work. A renewal of his licence was granted, and he accepted the ride on Bright Idea, with happy results.
