INTOXICATED DRIVER

COLLISION AT CORNER

Following a collision at the corner of- Ghuzhee Street and Willis Street, just after midnight, the driver of a car which had failed to give way to a car approaching from the right was arrested for being intoxicated. He was Jules Leon Kay, a blacksmith, aged 42, and he'was fined £25 by Mr.'J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. His licence was cancelled for twelve months.

Sub-Inspector G. H. Lambert said Kay was arrested at 12.25 a.m. today, and-he was still quite intoxicated when he was examined by a doctor an hour later.. He had not been before the Court before.

Mr. T. P. McCarthy, for the defendant, who pleaded guilty, said that Kay thought.he had sufficient time to cross the intersection ahead of the other car, which, however, struck the rear of .his car. The doctor's statement was not veiv definite, and it was submitted that, on the whole, the report was quite fair and not indicative of a very advanced state of intoxication. No one had been seriously hurt.

The Magistrate said Kay had. not been grossly intoxicated, .but. he had been definitely intoxicated. He thought lit a case where the defendant should be given the opportunity to pay a fine.
