FIFTY OFF THE ROAD

TAXIS OUT OF PETROL

That operators of taxi-cabs are seriously up against it as regards the allowances of petrol made to them by the Oil Fuel Controller was indicated yesterday, when one of the larger companies operating in Wellington published an apology to any of its clients who had been put to inconvenience through late arrival of taxis, or who had been unable to secure a taxi at all. The company stated that many taxis had used their rations and so had had to go off the road until the end of the month and their obtaining the new month's supply-

Today the manager of one of the companies told a "Post" reporter that he had been in communication with other companies in the city and had found that they were working on skeleton staffs, and that of the 180 taxis licensed to operate in Wellington 50 are off the roads today.

In the New Zealand Centennial billiards championship, now being held in Christchurch, the Wellington champion. S. Moses, has won his first two games! The advice also states that he has made a record break of 175. Already the tournament has provided several surprises, one being the defeat of Albertson (a former New Zealand champion) by the Gisborne representative Redmond.
