TROTTING
BRIGHT PROSPECTS
CLAY POT AT AUCKLAND
(By "Ariki Toa.")
Few horses race with such rare consistency as the northern ■ pacer Clay Pot, and she appears certain to add to her already good record when she contests the Orakei Handicap at Epsom on Saturday. She has accomplished her recent training tasks in very pleasing fashion, and it will not be on the score of condition if she fails at the weekend. Well Placed. The easy manner in which Whanako disposed of a strong field of maidens at his last start drew attention to the future prospects of the Peter Bingen gelding, and a good deal of interest will centre in his showings at Epsom on Saturday. He is an acceptor for both the Mount Eden and Grey Lynn Handicaps, and if reserved for the latter event, in which he figures on the limit, he is not likely to be at any fancy price. An Improver. Davey Day, who displayed promise as a two-year-old by running second in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes to his stable companion "Contender^ figures in the field for the Mount Eden Handicap at Epsom, after being off the scene last season. As a three-year-old he started eleven times, but except for a second in his last start was not prominent. He is by Great Parrish [from Lady Swithin, dam of Within. Brilliant Trotter. Surprise Journey, a high-class trotter in his day, is represented by four novices in the Introductory Handicap at Epsom, Golden Journey, Wharekawa, Surprise Packet, and Might Surprise. All had a little racing last season, and'should be capable of showing improvement. Golden Journey was a matinee winner, and ran third to Worthy Treasure and Barney Bingen in the Haeremai Handicap at Claudelands in April. Derby Conditions. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has made fresh arrangements for the running of the New Zealand Derby, and in future the forfeit system and not payment will operate. The club also intends to take over the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, and a yearling that develops the trotting instead of the pacing gait may be transferred without extra liability. The new arrangement will make a direct appeal to breeders, and will give added encouragement to the trotting enthusiast. Likely Trotter. Tenacity, who is listed for the Introductory Handicap at the Auckland Meeting, is a six-year-old mare by Worthy Bingen from Ivy Axworthy, and was bred, at Hawera by the late Mr. J. R. Corrigan. Tenacity is owned and trained by J. T. Paul, who has a fine record over a number of years with trotters.
