DRIVER FINED
INTOXICATION CHARGE
Edward Walter Prangley, a hairdresser and tobacconist, aged 31, was fined £.25 and costs and had his licence cancelled for twelve months, by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today,' for being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Featherston Street.
Sub-Inspector G.. H. Lambert said the defendant, who was very intoxicated and quite unfit to drive, collided with the safety zone outside the railway station at 1.10 o'clock this morning. " ■■■■■"'' '.•'■■■■• ' -■ . ■'■ <■'■ ■"
Mr. E. C. Wiren, who appeared for the defendant, said it was raining very heavily at the time. The fact that the defendant had driven in from the Hutt Valley might indicate that his intoxication was not advanced. The windscreen wiper was not in good order, and the thin tyres were liable to skid. He would urge a fine without the cancellation of the licence.
The Magistrate said it was absurd to ask for the licence not to be cancelled when everyone knew a licence v
had to be cancelled and that they were lucky if they did not go to gaol. It was recognisec" that the zone at the station was often a danger on a wet night, and the defendant had fallen into a trap that seemed to catch anybody. Three times recently -he had heard of collisions with the zone.. The defendant was allowed fourteen days to pay.
