NATIONAL SECURITY TAX
(To the Editor.) Sir,—May I through you draw attention to the unfair manner in which the National Security tax is being levied on superannuitants and others similarly situated. The Act became operative on July 15, so that on August 1 wage-earners had paid a fortnight's tax. I have learned, however, that on income, other than salary, the tax due on August 1 is for a full three months. Why should this be so? I am not complaining of the tax per se as I realise that a war must be paid for but I do object to this unfair discrimination against a body of people, mostly like myself of advanced years, who have to bear the mounting costs of living with no opportunity of increasing their incomes. Coincidentally with the imposition of the tax, many workers have had their wages increased to cover the tax but this only emphasises the wrong of which I complain.—l am, etc., SUPERANNUITANT.
