ATHLETIC WIN
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
FINAL AT PARK
By beating Wellington by 12 points to 7, at Athletic Park, on Saturday, Athletic carried off club championship honours for the 1940 season in Wellington. The great interest in the match was indicated by the crowd of nearly 9000 which attended. This season's senior competition, despite inroads made on the personnel of the various teams by calls to military service, has been a very keen one. Play, generally, has been of a high standard, and Athletic fully deserved to win the championship. Against Wellington in the decisive game on Saturday, they were just a shade the better side in all departments. One of the features of the match was the play of J. R. Sherratt, the former Wellington wing-three-quarter, who appeared for Wellington. His absence on military duty has affected his play little, and he showed great dash. Wellington, last year's winners of the championship, fill second place this season, and Johnsonville, who beat Eastbourne on Saturday, are third. Eastbourne and Poneke are level in fourth position, and Petone are a point behind these teams. On Saturday, Petone scored an easy win over Poneke. Considerable interest attaches to the Hardham Cup competition, in which St. Patrick's College Old Boys and Marist Bros. Old Boys are level in the lead, with one more series of matches to be played. These teams respectively won from Wellington College Old Boys and Oriental on Saturday. Hutt beat University narrowly. :
