CARTERTON CLUB
SEVERITY OF TAXATION
Referring to the loss of £365 shown on the year's working after providing for £200 depreciation, Mr. L. H. Smart, vice-president of the Carterton Racing Club, said that he attributed part of this loss to the Government for not handing back 1 per cent, of the totalisator takings. "We have to remember," he said, "that the Government tax is a serious problem. There is a possibility that the Government might kill the goose that laid the golden egg in that respect. In some cases the Government has received more money than the owners' stakes.
"Our biggest trouble, however, is that we hold our meeting - at a bad time of the year—the autumn. I consider that we should endeavour to race in the spring. Moreover, in the past year we have been paying higher stakes than required by the regulations. We paid out £200 more than we received from the totalisator last year, and we will have to put on our thinking caps in the near future. We have been going back for two years now." The report and balance-sheet were adopted, Mr. W. H. Booth remarking that through the slump years, when other clubs made reductions, the Carterton Club had kept their stake money up. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr. J. G. Oates; president, Mr. W. Howard Booth; vice-presidents, Messrs.. L. H. Smart and P. Bain; hon. treasurer, Mr. P. Cole; hon. clerk of scales, Mr. W. C. Deller; hon. timekeeper, Mr. E. J. Matson; stewards, Messrs. A. O. Abbott, H. J. Brown, W. C. Deller, G. H. Eaton, J. C. Harp, C. Jensen, J. Johnson, R. G. Kemble, E. J. Matson, V. L. Robinson, G. A. Vincent, F. C. Yule; secretary, Mr. J. Bairstow; trustees, Messrs. W. H. Booth, L. H. Smart, and P. Bain; hon. auditor, Mr. H. M. B. Trapp.
