RAIDS ON ABYSSINIA

DIRECT HITS MADE ON OBJECTIVES (British Official Wireless.) (Received August 23, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, August 22. A Royal Air Force communique issued in Cairo states that during the night of August 19-20 extensive flights were made over Abyssinia, with bombing of main objectives, and these suffered direct hits. Other bombers attacked with success the landing grounds at Tobruk and El Aden. Three Italian bombers, S79's, were seriously damaged during a raid at El j Tmimi yesterday. One was set on fire j and exploded, a second was burnt out. and a third had its wings blown off. There were also a number of near misses which probably caused damage to other enemy aircraft. All the British bombers returned safely. British aircraft also raided Bomba. Direct hits were registered on a seaplane jetty. South African and Rhodesian. aircraft carried out numerous offensive reconnaissance flights over Italian Somaliland. Direct hits were made on a jetty and a hangar at Mogadiscio, while at Merka one Caproni on the ground was damaged. Direct hits were also registered on buildings. |
