FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE
I Interpretation of a provision in the New Zealand (except Westland) freezing workers' award in regard to preparatory work was sought in an application made today in the Arbitration Court by the workers' Dominion organisation, represented by Mr. W. E Sill., The respondent party to the dispute was the Gear Meat Co., Ltd., Wellington, represented by Mr. C. E. Wilkin. The question for decision was
whether cooling floor hands employed by the company dividing sides of beef into quarters and removing them from the chilling room before the hour of 8 a.m. should be paid at overtime or ordinary rates. The dispute turned on the interpretation to be given to clause 3 of section 1 of the award, which allows employers to start men. before the ordinary hours specified to do "essentially necessary preparatory work for the day's operations" without payment of overtime, provided that overtime shall be paid after the daily number of hours specified has been ] worked. The Court reserved its deci- | sion.
