LUCKY TO ESCAPE
100 PERSONS IN SHELTER
DAMAGE IN SOUTHAMPTON
LONDON, August 14.
Over 100 persons were lucky to escape from the raid on Southampton yesterday. They were in a shelter under'a building which was hit and began to burn fiercely. Nobody was hurt, and all escaped by a back exit after firemen had turned hoses on flaming debris falling round the door. Several nearby buildings were severely damaged.
Eight public houses were damaged in another part of the town, some of them seriously. One shelter was partially flooded as a result of damage, to a water main. The occupants ran out but were machine-gunned, and hastily returned.
Business premises and shops were also damaged.
From the terrific noise above the clouds it appeared that a big fight was iri progress. Several Germans were shot down in the outskirts of - the town.
A number of houses were damaged and a gas main hit during a raid last night on a town in the north-east of Scotland, causing a fire.
