PAEKAKARIKI HILL
CLOSING OF ROAD OPPOSED
The proposal to close the Paekakariki Hill road came in for. severe criticism at a meeting of the Makara-Hutt Valley provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. It was felt by members that settlers on the road would be most unjustly penalised if the road were closed, and it was also felt that from the point of. view of defence it was essential to keep open this alternative inland route.
One member said that the drive out over the hill road and back along the coast was one of the best in New Zealand, and from this point of view alone, the keeping of /the road open was well worth consideration. After considerable discussion the following resolution was adopted unanimously:—"That this provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union expresses grave dissatisfaction with the proposal to close the Paekakariki Hill road. If this road is closed, the settlers on the road will be deprived of ■ access, and the value of their land will be seriously diminished."
