PIONEER MISSIONARY

"Ehoa I tell you that Te Matiu was the very busy man." Thus said an old Maori when speaking of the Rev. Joseph Matthews and telling of that pioneer missionary's long journeys to outlying kaingas, first on foot, later on horseback; of Native teachers, first taught to read, then trained for lay work; of Native clergy trained, churches built, church work and schools organised; of epidemics combated for weeks, and sometimes for months; of wheat sown, harvested, and ground; of barns built, and filled with harvest; of orchards and gardens planted; of ropes made for all, and of a thousand and one other activities. Truly, Te Matiu was the very busy man, and in "Matthews of Kaitaia" is told the full story of his arduous missionary work away in the far north of New Zealand over one hundred years ago. The volume is the compilation of two grandchildren, and it is published by Messrs. A. H. and A. W. Reed. It captures much from the past that was in danger of being lost and is therefore a valuable contribution to JMew1 Zealand's Centennial publications.
