TABLE TENNIS

BIG EVENTS PLANNED

There are big events ahead for table tennis in Wellington. The championships, to commence on August 21, will precede the New Zealand Inter-associa-tion matches, which are set down for August 30 and 31. Then there will be the New Zealand Centennial championships from September 2 to 4.

The inauguration of the inter-asso-ciation matches is of particular interest, as it amounts to1 interproviiicial competition. Otago has the present New Zealand champion, E. : A. Algie, and his brother as two fine players- for its team. Auckland is not likely to have the services of H. Boys, tne 1938 New Zealand champion and. member of the /New Zealand team which, last winter toured Australia, as he, is- in the R.N.Z.A.F. However, X; Cant-; lay (twice New Zealand champion), F. Paton, and Cheal «are three players expected to be on hand for the. present champion' province.. It is problematical whether ; Canterbury or any other southern association will be able to field a team.- Wairarapa:- is handy enough to be represented, as is Manawatu. ' Hawke's Bay, "-faith E-. J. Hughes in the district, may ..now b'e| forward enough to conipete, and has j the players to make it a possibility.Wellington and Hutt Valley will/.of course, be represented, it being more than likely that each will enter two teams: — \ " v ■
