BIG MATCHES OF SEASON

ARMY PLAYS PROMINENT PART

Compensating in no small way for the curtailment in the Rugby representative programme for this season is the part which the Army is playing. The special engagements undertaken by the Army representatives have meant much to the game in its wartime season, just as they have served their part in the struggle which calls men to the Colours. Ere the season is over there will probably be more of these Army matches; in fact, it is on the cards that teams representing the Army may themselves cap an eventful season with a big inter-camp match. This and other events are receiving consideration. A match between a Trentham side and Wairarapa is planned for next Saturday, and there is also a prospect of the Burnham Army team playing Otago at Dunedin on August 24. More important from Wellington's point of view is that a return Wellington-Army match is stated to be in view and that the Trentham-Burnham match, if it eventuates, will most likely take place in Wellington and should be an occasion for patriotic funds receiving a big lift.

Apart from their special matches with provincial sides, the soldier players are having a competition of their own. In this there, are several teams, and a fine range of talented players. Undefeated so far is the Army School team, which includes such fine players as Barton, Logan, Rhirid, McPhail, Carson, and Mills. The 25th Battalion team has quite a sprinkling of Wellington players, and it has been showing good form. This week it had a win over Brigaded Units by 19 points to 8. Among those in the Battalion side are A. Jack (of Oriental), R. Hansen (University), Elliott (Poneke), Fraser Smith (Wellington), Troy (Miramar), B. O'Connor (St. Patrick's College Old Boys), and B. Thorburn (Athletic), as well as H. L. Bradley (from Hawke's Bay), Connor (Wanganui), and Smart and Gay ton (Taranaki).

Natusch and Bowman (of Hawke's Bay) and Moorhead (Taranaki) are in the Brigaded Units team; J. R. Sherratt (Wellington) plays for the team representing the Forts; and P. Harvey (Wellington) is in the Mt. Victoria side.
