KAURI GUM
POSITION OF INDUSTRY
Buyers continue to report that there is little or no demand for varnish grades of kauri gum and that very little gum of this quality is being produced, the annual report on the kaurigum industry, which has been presented to Parliament, states. The demand for gum for linoleum purposes has continued and the amount exported during the year ended March 31 last showed a slight increase on the previous year, probably because manufacturers laid in supplies because of the unsettled international situation. Owing to the restrictions on importation of foreign gums the use of kauri gum by varnish manufacturers in* New Zealand has increased.
During the year 2412 tons were exported and realised £118,584, an average of £49 a ton, or £4 above the average for the previous year.
