BACK TO POLITICS
The commanding presence of Mr. Harcourt Johnstone, the new Secretary for Overseas Trade, will be welcomed back to the House of Commons, from which, as a Sinclair Liberal, he has been absent for some years.' In the House he was universally known as "Cricks," says the "Daily Telegraph." An ex-Whip, he is chairman of the Liberal Organisation Committee. A seat must now be found for him, and Sir John Simon's at Spen Valley is vacant. Sir William Jowitt, as Solici-tor-General, takes a post ranking lower than that—the Attorney-Generalship— which he held when he was last in office. Still, others are doing the same —Mr. Chamberlain, for instance. Sir William's fine presence and deep, expressive voice make him an outstanding House of Commons personality. Lord Caldecote, the Secretary for the Dominions, is, like Lord Hailsham, nearly ten years ago, to have the unusual experience of leading the House over which he presided as Lord Chancellor.
