WIN FOR M CGREADY

BOUT WITH O'CONNOR

WRESTLING AT TOWN HALL

In a professional heavyweight wrestling contest at the Wellington Town Hall last night Earl McCready, 17st 21b, beat Dan O'Connor, 16st 111b, by the only fall of the contest. It was not one of the Wellington Association's big nights, but O'Connor tried hard to keep the proceedings interesting as well as lively. s The first round produced mainly orthodox wrestling, the crowd, as well as O'Connor, being disappointed when McCready suddenly remembered what had happened at the start of their last bout and kept clear of a drop-kick which O'Connor threatened to use in the first minute. After all, it was too good a trick to use twice. In the second round things warmed up considerably, with batterings and hammerings, and pushings through and liftings over the ropes. When McCready finally chased O'Connor into a corner with flying fists the referee decided it was time to step in and say. "Go easy, boys, both of you. Keep 'em open!" McCready opened the third round with a body scissors, but he was not far from being pinned before he released it, and he also encountered trouble in the. form of a cradle splits. O'Connor had some difficulty in getting his keynote in acquiescence with that of the referee. He was surprised to learn that he could have his back knuckled and, in the fourth round, he was astonished when told that he was wrong in taking a handful of McCready'svmbuth. More" excursions" out of the ring threatened in this round, and there was another warning against closed fists. In the fifth round McCready, put on a Japanese toe hold but O'Connor escaped under the ropes and took his time about coming back. He hid no great trouble in seeing out the remainder of the round. -O'Connor started using jolts in the sixth round, but McCready sent back more "in return, with dumps added for good measure. Finally McCready put on a full nelson with his legs and took a fall at 3min Bsec. McCready was on the look-out for drop-kicks in the seventh round, but he had to suffer plenty without having to meet a single drop-kick. In the last round O'Connor produced his first drop-kick, but it did not "click" properly, and no great damage was done. He ended the bout by grabbing Me- : .Cready by the hair and throwing him out of the ring. Mr. Alf. Jenkins was the referee. THE PRELIMINARIES. Results of the amateur preliminary bouts are:—W.
