LONDON. July 28. The Ministry of Information states that the German announcer Lord Hawhaw today repeated the statement that a great attack against England is only a question of days, possibly hours, and that the coastal attacks are only a mild preliminary.
A correspondent of the British United Press at Vichy states that the Germans have closed road as well as rail traffic between occupied and unoccupied France, and that some quarters consider that this step indicates that operations against Britain from Northern France are imminent.
An official French communique states:—"The return of refugees to the occupied zones and the transfer of Government services to Paris have been provisionally stopped."
The French radio announced that German-occupied France has been split up into five zones. Refugees are forbidden to enter or leave the two most strategic areas, one of which embraces the Channel ports and the hinterland and the other takes in the Maginot Line from Switzerland to Belgium. Special permission to travel must be obtained in the other zones and is granted only to farmers, doctors, nurses, and officials. It is learned that trains are being held up at Moulins, preventing refugees reaching Paris, including a thousand bank workers.
"The month ahead may be a most dangerous period," said the Minister of Health (Mr. Malcolm Mac Donald), in urging parents not to bring evacuated children home for the summer holidays. He stressed the fact that casualties so far have been smaller in the country than in the towns.
The Ministry of Information has repeated a warning to the public to carry gasmasks. It says one cannot assume that the Germans will not use gas because they have so far refrained from
doing so
