SATURDAY'S GAMES

WESLEY BEAT TECHNICAL

Wesley's defeat of Technical by 2 goals to 1 was the most notable feature of Saturday's matches in the senior A grade of the men's hockey championships. In the other games Karori 1 met their club-mates Karori 2, winning by 4 goals to 1. Hutt beat Wellington by 3 goals to 2, and Huia defeated University by 8 goals to 0. KARORI I V. KARORI 2. Karori 1 and Karori 2 met under most unfavourable conditions at Karori Park; It was hardly possible to expect good hockey under the conditions, but the game was willing if not scientific. McKelvie scored two goals for Karori 1, and Adams and Jeromson scored one each. Jensen scored for Karori 2, the game ending: Karori (1) 4, Karori (2) 1. TECHNICAL V. WESLEY. Wesley had an unexpected victory over Technical, gaining the decision more through the thoroughness of their defence than through the force of their attack. In the first half, play was very even, but Wesley broke through twicce and scored, Bade and Sowden netting. In the second half Technical played vigorously, and were almost continually in Wesley territory. The Wesley defence stood firm, and Child, In goal, brought off some magnificent saves. Napier managed to slip in an angle shot for Technical, but in spite of repeated attacks, Technical could not score again. The game ended: Wesley 2, Technical 1. HUTT V. WELLINGTON. Hard hitting characterised the game between Hutt and Wellington, and except for some attractive play by Coombe, centre half for Wellington, there was very little of note in either team. Scorers for Hutt were Mullins, Prazer, and Chapman, and for Wellington Ferguson vind Wellum netted. The game finished: Hutt 3, Wellington 2. HUIA V. UNIVERSITY. The Huia team, in top position on the senior A hockey ladder, had little difficulty in piling up a big score against University. Although they tried hard and were not so outclassed as the score suggests, the University side could not withstand the combination and accuracy of the Huia forwards. Kiddle, who made his first appearance for University, created a favourable impression. Scorers for Huia were Russell (3), Searle (3), Rough, and Wilson, the game ending:—Hula 8, University 0. LOWER GRADES. A number of lower-grade matches were cancelled on account of the condition of the grounds. Results were as follows: — Senior B (first division). —Huia 6, University 0; Hutt 3, Wellington 1; Karori .7, Petone 2; Island Bay 3, Technical 3. Senior B (second division).—Huia 2, Karori 2 ' Junior.—Huia 6, Technical (2) 6; Technical (1) defaulted to Hutt; Petone 5, Wellington 2 • Island Bay, a bye.
